About This Data

What This Measures

This report measures activity across Open Caption Finder's mobile apps (iOS and Android) and website. Because the two are combined here, each chart and table is tagged with its source: Mobile, Web, or both. The three categories are demand (user searches for open caption showtimes by location), supply (open caption showtimes, films, and theaters returned in search results, across all sources), and engagement (favorites, ticket link taps, and user-submitted requests). This data represents activity within the Open Caption Finder platform and does not claim to represent total U.S. demand for open caption showtimes. A unique user is identified by device. Mobile users who decline location access are assigned a default location of Denver, CO; website visitors are located by approximate IP.

Where the Data Comes From

Showtime data is collected from multiple sources.

  • AMC Open caption showtime data provided through a direct API integration with AMC.
  • Third-Party Showtimes Database A commercial showtimes database covering U.S. theaters, supplementing our direct sources.
  • Automated Theater Monitoring A proprietary system built in-house that continuously monitors listings from hundreds of independent and regional theaters. This system requires daily maintenance and is actively managed. Individual theater coverage is visible on the data map.
  • Theater and Community Submissions Theaters, filmmakers, and festival organizers submit screenings to us via newsletters, direct outreach, or a public submission form on our website.
  • Film Festivals A proprietary system for tracking open caption screenings at film festivals.
  • Manual Entry Some theaters publish open caption schedules only through social media or non-standard channels. Our team collects and enters these weekly.
  • Community Reports Users report missing or incorrect showtimes, or flag other data issues, through the app. Each report is verified by a moderator before any changes are made to app showtimes.

Understanding the Data Map

The data map displays five layers, each togglable:

  • Demand Locations where users searched and found open caption showtimes. Warmer areas indicate higher search volume with results.
  • Gaps Locations where users searched but no open caption showtimes were available. Cooler areas indicate higher unmet demand.
  • Film Festivals Film festivals tracked by our system. Orange markers indicate festivals; green markers indicate festivals with open caption showtimes.
  • User Requests When a search returns no results, users can submit what they were looking for. Responses typically include a city, state, movie title, theater name, or a general comment.
  • Theater Monitoring Individual theaters covered by our proprietary monitoring system.

Privacy

All data is presented in aggregate. No individually identifiable information is collected or included in this report.

Deeper Data Available

This report shows aggregate demand and supply trends. We also offer detailed intelligence for organizations that want to act on the data:

  • Theater Intelligence Performance by location, demand near specific theaters, and coverage gap analysis at the theater level.
  • Programming Intelligence Movie-level demand data, chain comparisons, and insights into what audiences want to see in open captions and where.
  • Conversion Tracking Search-to-ticket click-through rates, unique user engagement, and attribution analysis.
